Greetings, family! Today, it is time to dive into one of the most powerful forces in reggae, the word, sound, power of the sound system culture. For me, the sound system isn’t just speakers rigged up on a stage. It’s a platform calling out to the community; a space for truth, unity and positive energy, bringing Jah’s message to
the world. From its origins in the island of Jamaica to the British Isles and worldwide, to its influence in Ethiopia on my journey as The Intellect Benjamin Beats, the sound system is a core element of my mission. While growing up in London, the sound system culture was everywhere. I’ll never forget the energy of the TTI dances, basslines roll, the music penetrating the soul, the selector drooping tracks like priceless gems, and the MC who tuned into the crowd with call and response. It was an experience and a vibration that brought people together. Those moments taught me that music was a powerful tool, not just for mere entertainment but for deep connection, education, and revolution.
When I repatriated to Ethiopia, I carried that energy with me. I wanted to create a space where people could feel that same power of music, and that’s how one of many events like Vibration Station was born and nurtured. This event wasn’t just a party; it was a pioneering moment. We brought the raw energy of Jamaican-style sound systems to Ethiopia, blending heavy dub mixing with conscious lyrics and creating a space where people of all backgrounds could come together under one vibration.
Vibration Station
Vibration Station became more than an event as it grew; it became a movement. Wherever the station stopped, the people would flock. People came not just to dance but to connect, to share stories, and to feel part of something bigger than music alone. I witnessed the true essence and power of the sound system as a cultural and spiritual tool. It’s not just about the music; it’s about the message. Reggae has always been about truth, rights, and uplifting the people, and the sound system amplifies that mission. This philosophy is woven into everything I do, from my studio work at Frontline 12 Records to the upcoming Roar Like a Lion EP. The sound system spirit is alive in every track I produce. Whether it’s the analogue warmth of the bassline or the conscious depth of the lyrics, I’m carrying forward the tradition while pushing it into new spaces.
Hit The Road
A world tour is the next evolutionary step of this journey. Starting in Ethiopia and travelling through Europe, Jamaica, and beyond, every stage will carry the energy of Vibration Station. It’s not just about bringing my music to the world—it’s about bringing the sound system culture, the unity, and the fire to every corner. But I can’t do it alone. The sound system is nothing without the people. You are the soul of this movement. Whether you’re at the front of the crowd or connecting with the vibration from miles away, you’re a part of this family.
So, let’s keep the fire blazing. Let’s take this sound system to the world. The lion has roared, and it’s time to answer the call.
Roar Like a Lion. Blessed and Progressive.
